‘Open Studio’ is a business to business offering intended for both those who already trade in Nepali-Tibetan carpets as well as for those just beginning their trading relationship; it is not for the layperson nor end consumer of carpets.
Over the course of two weeks participants are immersed in production, participate hands-on in finishing their own samples, and network with pertinent industry partners as they expand their understanding of rug and carpet making in Nepal.
Whether striving to be a more informed salesperson, building a house collection, or establishing an importer relationship, ‘Open Studio’ speaks to the needs of the modern carpet trade.
Whether striving to be a more informed salesperson, building a house collection, or establishing an importer relationship, ‘Open Studio’ speaks to the needs of the modern carpet trade and is your gateway to increased profitability and client satisfaction.
By working directly with manufacturing you are able to leverage increased margins to the benefit of your business as well as your clientele. Additionally, the prowess of Karnor Carpets is at your disposal to create private label (house) collections - exclusively yours for the offering.
Potential participants are reminded of personal responsibility and are strongly encouraged to research and understand the travel requirements of Kathmandu and Nepal. A tourist visa is required and available at the airport upon arrival; a fee is charged. ‘Open Studio’ has been created with the 15 day tourist visa in mind. More information on visa and travel requirements can be found here: https://www.immigration.gov.np/page/tourist-visa
Bring the artistic tools required for your manner of design. This may be paper and pencil, this may be tablet and stylus, this may be laptop. You are welcome to bring as much or as little as you see fit, but be certain to pack at least your ‘core’ preferred tools. Likewise please bring materials for taking notes (Don’t worry, there is no test.) as well as power adaptors for your electronics.
Most mobile providers offer international roaming service in Nepal, contact your provider for more information; domestic (Nepal) sim cards are available to tourists for a fee. The hotel concierge can assist you in obtaining one. Likewise, WhatsApp is widely used
and is highly recommended.
We understand that travelling to Kathmandu opens up myriad possibilities for exploration and networking, especially for those already working in the trade of handknotted rugs and carpets. Likewise, we know that everyone has different areas of interest and specialties.
As such, during week two of ‘Open Studio’ the schedule includes three afternoons of unstructured ‘Free Time’ to be used as participants see necessary. Perhaps a more personal exploration of one element of rug making (which we will arrange), an afternoon shopping adventure, yoga, sightseeing, or - because we are realistic people - even a visit to another maker (which you arrange on your own).
Evenings are unstructured free time as well. Likewise you may opt out of the weekend cultural tours if you so choose. It is, after all, your time (Cultural tour fees are included in the program fees and are not refundable). We only ask you to be respectful of everyone’s time and commitment to making ‘Open Studio’ a worthwhile experience for all participants.
Nepal is renowned for its hospitality and part of hospitality is likewise being a
good guest. Please observe local customs, immersing yourself, as much as
possible, in new experiences.
Be mindful of the weather forecast. The weather during this time of year is typically quite good, but as many buildings lack climate control, a light jacket may be required.
Payments at establishments catering to tourists and upmarket clientele likely accept payment by card, whereas smaller merchants may be cash only. It is advisable to carry local currency.
Caution should be exercised when drinking water. Only drink bottled water or water from a known, trusted, potable source.
Nepal is a sub-tropical country and has several mosquito borne illnesses. It is advised to pack mosquito repellant.
Kathmandu is quickly becoming a cosmopolitan city at once charming and cacophonous, quaint and urbane, bustling and reserved, wealthy and poor. The Open Studio experience will expose you to the dichotomies of this reality.
